- February 25, 2006: What limits reactor fuel burnup? by Iain who blogs at http://ambivalentengineer.blogspot.com
So what is the burnup limit, and do operators currently burn fuel all the way to the limit?- October 7, 2001: Can fission by-products make steam? by John Mahler
The radioactive by-products of fission generate heat for a considerable period of time after they are removed from a reactor. The conventional view is that accounting for this characteristic property of reactor plants is a costly nuisance that requires extensive engineering effort. In this view, the heat must be actively dissipated in order to prevent core materials from overheating and melting.
John Mahler, a man who has a job requiring extensive effort to conserve heat wonders if the heat produced by fission by products could be harnessed instead of being wasted.
His question is an illustration of the meaning of the old adage that is the foundation of a good portion of the free enterprise system. "One man's trash is another's treasure."Copyright 1995-2006 Adams Atomic Engines, Inc. All rights reserved.
